O Taste and See That God is Good

This meditation is based on a passage for March 30, 2010 in the Daily Lectionary Year 2 from the Book of Common Worship for the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) (1993).

Text: Psalm 34

Reflection and Question: This is a wonderfully hopeful psalm. Much of its power comes from its realism; it recognizes sin and suffering and still assures the afflicted that God will comfort us. And even though the poet verges on dividing people into the good and the bad, we all know from experience that the line between good and evil runs through every heart. In other words, the psalmist speaks for all of us as both the righteous and the wicked. Nevertheless, the sense of God is consistent: God is a loving refuge for all in need. Grasping this truth, we can join the psalmist in joyful praise. How does this psalm make you hopeful?

Prayer: I will bless God at all times; God’s praise shall be continually in my mouth.
O magnify God with me, and let us exalt God’s name together!
O taste and see that God is good! Happy are those who take refuge in God. Amen.
